This is a huge range because each remodel is different. Lets look at the why. Heres a check list:
How old is your home? Older homes can have plaster and lathe and cast iron tubs. Tile was the most common surround in old homes. These are heavy and messy.
Are the walls and floor even? In very old homes things are crooked, but you’d already know that.
Are repairs needed? Is there hidden rot or weak supports?
Is there tile to remove? This is a really hard part of the job. Tie is heavy and really hard to remove.
What kind of shower pan? Pre-made pans are much simpler and inexpensive. Custom pans take more time and are much more expensive and making them right is not for the inexperienced installer.
New shower valve? Yes, almost always. I never recommend reusing the old valve.
Old plumbing? Drains and water supplies can be difficult to attach to or even worn out.
Shower surrounds. There are so many options these days from the least expensive from Home Depot or Lowes to pre-made panels like epoxy to tile options which can get really up there.
Shower doors or curtains? Doors create the best seal to keep the water in and for a shower only its the best option.
Is the contractor reliable? Theres a big question. The best way to tell is that they are invested in your community. Do they belong to the chamber? Do they have a good website? Is their business card well made? Can they provide references? Is their business in good standing?
